January 25th - Great Britain - Burns' Night
cartoon scottish bagpipes
Scotlands most famous poet. Robert (Rabbie) Burns was born on January 25th 1759. Burns' night is celebrated with ceilidh's (traditional scottish dances) and a dinner.

The dinner consists of haggis and clapshot (neeps' and tatties (turnip and potato's for the truly uninitiated) and usually followed with oat bannocks and cheese.

The haggis must be "piped in" i.e. carried in with a piper playing the bagpipes. It is then "addressed" with Rabbie Burns' "address to a haggis" poem.

Burns' night is now celebrated by expatriate Scots the world over. Make a request to the UK Gopher who can supply you with the necessary items to recreate your very own Burns' night.
