March 6th - Great Britain - Mothering Sundaymothers day

Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday was celebrated in Britain from the beginning of the 17th Century and was traditionally the fourth Sunday in Lent. Servants serving in large houses were permitted to bake a fruitcake, known as a "mothering cake" and take it as a gift for their mother. The custom almost died out as the number of servants diminished over the years.

American servicemen brought the custom back to Britain during WWII and it has remained ever since. Mother's Day is in March for the UK and May in the USA.

Traditionally, Mum gets a lie-in while the children make her breakfast in bed and buy her a box of chocs. In America, husbands and relatives will give their loved ones gifts and cards even though they are not related!

This year, get your mother or loved one something they'll really appreciate and remember - their favourite chocolate from the UK for instance.
