Branston Pickle - A brief history
In 1922, Crosse & Blackwell first created their famous pickle in a small Staffordshire village in Branston - it soon became a favorite across the British isles and with more than 28 million jars of the pickle sold each year in Britain it is still going strong.
A cheese and pickle sandwich is the British equivalent of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich much beloved in the States. Without Branston pickle it just wouldn't be the same. More than 1 in 3 households in the UK buys a jar every year.
Panic swept the British Isles in 2004 as - due to a fire at the factory - news that the UK supply of Branston Pickle would soon run out. What is a Briton to do without the beloved pickle to smear on a cheese sandwich?
Entrepreneurs on Ebay soon cashed in the terror of Branston-lovers and were doing a brisk trade - according to reports someone tried to sell a carrier bag that once carried a jar of the pickle whilst someone else auctioned off a sniff of their jar.
Branston pickle lovers such as Catherine Zeta-Jones (maybe she should use the gopher service.?!) and Naomi Campbell will be happy to know that the factory is back up and running at full capacity.
