Fisherman's Friend - A Brief History
Fisherman's Friend is a brand of extremely strong lozenges. They are manufactured Fleetwood, Lancashire at the heart of the British fishing industry. Most Britons take the lozenges in the winter months as they act as a decongestant and help clear a stuffy nose. However, in Norway fisherman's friends are wolfed down as candies - Norwegians enjoy the strong taste and treat them like sweets. Fisherman's friend - A brief history It all started in 1865 in Fleetwood. Many fishermen from the area went on long fishing trips in the North Sea and the Arctic Circle - to this day one of the harshest and most dangerous jobs in the world. As expected in these difficult conditions many of the fishermen would catch a cold and get stuffed up. A Fleetwood pharmacist called James Lofthouse devised a solution containing eucalyptus and menthol - not a cure but it helped relieve some of the symptoms.
The local fishermen were amazed at the miracle lozenges and referred to them as their "friends" - and so the name stuck ever since. Fisherman's Friend is still run by the descendants of James Lofthouse in the North of England.
