Digestives and Chocolate Digestives

Britain is world-renowned for its biscuits and one of the best-loved brands is McVitie's. Similar to other products, the simple digestive biscuit was first created to aid digestion - the biscuit contains a lot of baking soda which is thought (or at least it was a hundred years ago) to aid digestion.

McVitie's Digestive Biscuit is still as popular today - especially with the addition of chocolate to make the Chocolate Digestive in 1925. According to the brand's owners - Interbrand - 52 biscuits are gobbled down every second in the UK and they sell 71 million packets per year (this number is probably higher in the commercial break for ITV's "Coronation Street" - when there were only three television channels in the UK, electricity companies would complain of an upsurge in demand during commercial breaks as millions of people turned on their kettles to brew some tea).

Hobnobs

Probably the nicest biscuit in the world, Hobnobs were first created in 1985 followed by the Chocolate Hobnob in 1987. The Hobnob is similar to a digestive biscuit but has a sweeter flavour.

To "Hobnob" means to "rub elbows with" and conjures up images of somebody spending time with the rich and powerful - such as "he hobnobs with the best of society". Why McVitie's chose this name remains unknown.
