EATING IN THAILAND

Eating in Thailand

Thai SoupsEating in Thailand, while definitely a culinary adventure, can run from the surprisingly exotic to the surprisingly mundane. What surprised me most about Thailand is the abundance of western stores - especially in Bangkok .  Many of the stores were British including Tesco's, Boot's, and Deli France. The ubiquitous McDonalds are also in many of the outlying towns such as Ayuthaya.

Some restaurants were extremely good - especially on the island of Koh Tao. On the island of Koh Samui there are many western bars and places to eat.

Night markets

A must whilst in Thailand, however, is to eat at the many night markets throughout the country,  where for as little as 20 baht (roughly equivalent to 33 British pence) a good-sized meal - such as pad-tai - can be had.

Many street vendors also sell crepes of all description - chocolate, banana, strawberry - also for around 20 baht.

The night markets are recommended as they pack up at the end of each night - unlike some of the street vendors in Bangkok. So each night you know that the food should be fresh and the stall has been cleaned that day.  The usual advice of eating where lots of other people are also eating still rings true in Thailand.

The night markets have all kinds of interesting foods to try, such as dried octopus and deep fried crickets and various insects.  The insects tasted just like batter - try some!
