Medical Insurance - Especially in the USA

insurance

Whatever reason you have for traveling abroad you must consider what will happen in the event of needing medical assistance.  This is particularly important when traveling to America as, unlike the UK, it does not offer universal health coverage and emergency services can cost a fortune! Insurance is a good idea, however, wherever you travel. Americans may need only to check with their regular insurance provider to see that they are covered outside of the states. Most companies will cover you, but it's best to check beforehand.

Vacation (under 30 days)

If you are going for a holiday not lasting more than 30 days you should consider what type of travel insurance you require.  If you make many trips abroad then you should consider annual travel insurance.  This means that you can travel as many times as you like and not have to organize insurance every time you travel.  For British residents, BAA has a reasonable annual insurance for around £70.00 and it used to offer some limited cover for traveling within the UK (check this as it often changes). For Americans, short term travel insurance can be found on STA's website for reasonable prices.

If it is just a one-off short break then shop around for the best deal with good comprehensive coverage.  Although there are other options, such as free cover with credit cards and form E111 for treatment in EEA countries and Switzerland (again for UK citizens), make sure that you are happy with the level of coverage they provide as on closer inspection they may not be comprehensive.

Longer-term travel (over 30 days)

Backpackers and travelers abroad for extended periods of time will need to search for insurance that they are 100% comfortable with - especially as this is a group that is usually on a tight budget yet plan on many daring adventures.

Many mainstream insurers are not equipped to provide insurance for twelve months of continuous travel so you may get some outrageous quotes of £600+ or $1,000.  Talk to STA Travel/ Endsleigh Insurance or the organization in charge of the project.  The range should be £200 to £400 ($400 - $800) for twelve months depending on coverage desired.  Quantas used to offer comprehensive insurance of twelve months continuous travel for £260.

Moving abroad

Depending on what you are doing and where you go you may not need to worry too much about insurance.  For instance, if you are moving to the UK or Canada, you will automatically be eligible for healthcare.  If you will be working in the States and work for a reputable employer they usually provide healthcare as part of the benefits of the job. Do some research on what the situation is in the country you are planning to go to.

On the other hand, if you are a student or working for an employer that does not offer healthcare you will need to make some decisions about what type you desire.  If you plan on comprehensive cover, allowing you to visit a doctor as required, then healthcare cover can cost upwards of $400 per month in America.

However, there are cheaper student alternatives out there - start by contacting your school to find out more.  If you cannot afford insurance it is worth contacting a doctor in your area and finding out if they accept patients without insurance and if they will charge you the same rate that they charge insurance companies (for example they may charge you $40 per visit as opposed to the $125) then if the need arises you can find assistance quickly.

A basic level of cover is still important.  Some companies, such as International Citizens, offer minimal insurance that only cover visits to the emergency room.

Whatever you decide, it's worth shopping around and familiarizing yourself with different levels of insurance and premiums to find the right balance for you.
