A Night in Penang, Malaysia

WorshipThe island of Penang in the North West of Malaysia was established by Francis Light in 1786 as the first British trading post in the Far East.  Like the rest of Malaysia there is a large Chinese and Asian population on the Island. The Chinese were brought to Malaysia by the British to work in the tin mines and the Indians to work in the rubber plantations and to build the railways.

Penang Hill

Try not to go to Penang during the Chinese New Year as most places are closed.  Because Lonely Planet raved so much about Penang Hill to watch the sunset we duly queued up with thousands of other people to travel up the funicular railway to watch the sunset over Georgetown with much pushing and squashing of bodies - the experience didn't live up to the rave reviews LP gave it.

Walking Tour

The Thomas Cook guidebook has a good walk which takes you to Fort Cornwallis, St George's Church, Kuan Yin Temple (oldest Chinese temple in Penang), Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple, Kapitam Kling Mosque, Leong San Tong Khao Chinese Clan House. The walk was enjoyable - unfortunately many of the highlights were closed due to the Chinese New Year!

Tandoori Feast

We dined on the street at a Tandoori restaurant where the naan bread were baked in front of us on the street. We ordered a huge banquet and it was one of the biggest and best meals I've ever had.  The price?  16 ringgit - about £3 or $7 divided byNaan Bread two.

Later we went to a bar and ordered a single beer each - the price came to more than the Tandoori feast.
