Southern African Safari

I recently took a tour of southern Africa, traveling through Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa, with a few days in Zimbabwe at Victoria Falls. I used Kiboko Tours which I would not highly recommend except for those on a really tight budget. The tour was very economical, costing only $1500 for 3 weeks, including transportation, food and accommodation.

African Sand DuneThat said, the accommodation was an old, leaky tent, food consisted of grade D meat and very little else, and transportation was an old, very uncomfortable, non-air conditioned bus. If you can afford a little bit more, I would definitely go for a slightly more posh tour. If you can't afford it, take my advice: stock up on snacks at every grocery store you stop at!

The trip itself, though, was amazing. Africa is definitely a place everyone should visit in their lifetime, a very life-changing type of trip. Southern Africa is clean, safe, beautiful and sparsely populated, meaning you can camp at night in the bush miles away from anyone else. We spent every night around a campfire, and slept out under the stars.

One of the highlights of the trip was Moremi Game Reserve, in Bostwana. This is one of the few parks that allows campers to African Lioncamp inside the park, with no barriers between them and the animals. At night, once the fire goes out, the animals roam freely throughout camp. We were visited each night by hyenas, hippos, elephants and even a lion! Needless to say, there are strict rules about campers staying in their tents and having absolutely no food in the tents at night.

Another highlight was Victoria Falls, adventure sport capital of Africa. The Falls themselves are beautiful, with rainbows African Sunseteverywhere. But the real fun is all of the activities you can do there. We went to Zambia for the day to go white water rafting, with rapids as high as class 4, 5, and 6. They have to send a special safety boat behind you in case anyone falls out, which needless to say a few did, though not me fortunately!

All in all an amazing time! Complete with hiking sand dunes in Namibia, going to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town and game drives in Chobe National Park in Botswana. Highly recommended!
