Camping and Visiting Niagara Falls

Niagara FallsAn inexpensive must see when visiting or living in the North-East of America is Niagara Falls. Whilst it is not the tallest in the world (that spot is taken by Angel Falls, Venezuela), Niagara Falls is magnificent because of its combined height and volume of water. The spray from the falls can be seen many miles away.

We hired a car and drove to the Four-Mile Creek State Campground. There were six of us camping and for a prime non-electric site it was only $19.75 per day. The campsite was amazing, plenty of space, good facilities and a fire pit and wooden bench for each site. Wood was pricey at $6 a bundle but is cheaper from the supermarket or you can always collect some from the edge of Lake Ontario. Reserve a spot online at www.reserveamerica.com.

An advantage of camping in the State Park is that you are automatically given a parking permit for all other State Parks, CampingNiagara State Park being one of them. We therefore received free parking each time we visited. The view from the American side is spectacular but the Canadian side receives more spray and a better view of the horseshoe shape of the falls.

An $11.50 ride on the "Maid of the Mist" is a must-do. The boat travels right up to the falls and gives you a different perspective. We walked over the bridge to Canada and the difference in immigration between the two countries was noticeable - Canada had two booths whereas America had six and charges 50cents to go through a turn stile!

Whilst in the Buffalo area, a trip to Anchor Bar where Buffalo Wings originated is a must. We feasted on a platter of 50.
