Altoids
"The Original Celebrated Curiously Strong Peppermints"
Altoids History
Though widely consumed across North America the exceptionally strong mints are in actual fact a British product still manufactured in Bridgend, Wales.
Smith & Company originally created the lozenge in the 19 th Century reign of King George III to relieve stomach problems. They gave the mints the name "Altoids" from the Latin "Alt" (to change) and Greek "oids" (take the form of).
The Altoids range:
Like chocolate, the lozenges have evolved from medical usage and are enjoyed chiefly as breath mints. Altoids - now over 200 years old - has expanded its range with new flavors such as wintergreen, spearmint, peppermint and cinnamon and even sour flavors. Some flavors are limited editions so far Kraft has created ginger and liquorice mints.
The Altoids Packaging
Altoids are packaged in tins - similar to old tobacco tins - once the mints have been finished off some people have created pinhole cameras, radios, camping stoves and iPod battery packs. Information about Altoids is written on the paper insert that comes with each tin.
Altoids are infamously linked to the Monica Lewinsky scandal - she is reported to have chewed on some Altoids before the notorious incident!
Sadly, only the original peppermint range is available in the UK and even then they are not widely available. If you would like the New York Gopher to buy some Altoids on your behalf and ship them direct to your door -why not make a request now?
