Brownies  - A Brief History

Though the origins of brownies are sketchy it is thought to be American.  The name comes simply from its brown color.  Legend has it that a careless cook forgot to add baking powder to her recipe and a stodgy, gooey brownie was the result.

The brownie is America 's favorite bar cookie - the different recipes are endless though most include chocolate chips and nuts.  Brownies can be almost cake-like or like fudge.

The first ever recipe for brownies is thought to be one that appeared in a catalog by Sears, Roebuck and Co. Catalog in 1897.
