Buffalo chicken wings are a traditional American bar food: nothing tastes better with a nice, cold beer, than a tangy, spicy, juicy Buffalo chicken wing. Not widely available outside the USA , the original Buffalo chicken wing is deep fried and doused with a spicy orange sauce that is a combination of Tabasco and butter and some other special ingredients and spices. If done properly, they are served up with a side of celery and blue cheese, to cool your mouth down in between bites of the spicy wings.
History:
The original Buffalo wings were created in Anchor Bar, in Buffalo, New York (near Niagara Falls), owned at the time by Teressa and Frank Bellisimo. Legend has it that Teressa invented Buffalo wings in 1964 when her son and his friends came to the bar looking for a quick late night snack. "Mother Teressa" (Buffalonians take their wings very seriously) was preparing to make chicken stock with a bunch of wings and, improvising, stuck them under the broiler (later they switched to deep frying), sprinkled them with a hot sauce she concocted, took some celery sticks off the antipasto dishes, put some blue cheese dressing (the house dressing) in a small bowl and served them.
Varieties:
Buffalo wings typically come in at least two varieties (mild and hot) though some places serve them in dozens of varieties including atomic, nuclear, and 911! Chains serving wings have sprung up across the states, including FWOT ("Fingers, Wings and Other Things") and Cluck-U; but the original Buffalo wings are still being served at Anchor Bar in Buffalo , New York .
Buffalo wings can now be found across most of the United States and have even showed up on menus in Dubai and Tokyo. Once you've tasted them, you'll know why: these tangy treats are positively addictive!
