All About Jell-o

Jello on a spoon

Jell-o was first invented by the famous industrialist and inventor Peter Cooper in 1845 (of Cooper Union fame in New York City). Pearl Wait bought the patent from Peter Cooper in 1895 and it was his wife who came up with the now recognized name of “jell-o”.
It was not until Frank Woodward bought the patents to Jell-o and marketed the desert by sending out well-dressed salesman. After some initial difficulties, the product became one of the most-loved in America.
Jell-o’s first flavors were raspberry, strawberry, orange and raspberry it was not until 1930 that lime was launched (a favorite of Salt Lake City – more lime jell-o is eaten here than anywhere else).
