Polo & Ralph Lauren Clothing - A Brief History

In 1967, the now world famous designer - Ralph Lauren - introduced his Polo label with 26 boxes of ties.  A product of their time, Lauren designed flamboyant ties that were in juxtaposition to their traditional, narrow counterparts - his ties were an instant hit.

The name Polo was chosen after the sport (pictured) as Polo conjures up images of nobility and style.  Prince Charles and his sons William and Harry are amongst Polo's most avid players.

According to Polo.com, Lauren's style is a fusion of "classic American style with the refinement, tailoring and sensibility of European fashion".

The Logo

The now renowned Polo logo came from Ralph Lauren's line of women's clothing - it first appeared on the cuff.

In 1972, Polo introduced the now legendary mesh t-shirt in 24 colours.  This shirt, with the polo player, is a quintessentially American garment.

Seven years later, in 1993, Lauren opens the first Polo store opposite the Rhinelander Mansion on Madison Avenue.  The Polo sport line is established, reflecting the growing importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Polo Firsts

Ralph Lauren created a number of firsts with his company.  The first of the firsts was creating the first ever boutique within an existing store.  This was in the famous Bloomingdale's store in Manhattan , New York in 1969.

Polo Diversity

Ralph Lauren and his Polo brand have diversified to include fragrances, media and even a restaurant (next to the largest Polo store in the world in Chicago ).
