The worlds largest chain of coffee shops originated in Seattle, Washington. The first Starbucks coffee bean stand opened in Pike Place Market (America’s largest, oldest, continuous, outdoor market) in 1971.
Earlier that same year, Jim Stewart started Stewart Brothers Coffee in the same market, both coffee bean stands offered freshly roasted beans to a population accustomed to instant coffee. Both were and to continue to be a huge success and began buying coffee beans from all over the world and developing their own blends.
Starbucks opened its first coffee house also in Seattle in 1984. Stewart Bros continued to sell beans to supermarkets and later changed its name to “SBC Inc” this company now sells coffee under the banner of “Seattle’s Best Coffee” and was bought out by Starbucks in 2003.
